President Trump Ends DACA Program for Undocumented Immigrants

|

DACA, also known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was a beloved immigration policy founded by President Obama during his time in office. DACA seeks to protect undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, commonly known as Dreamers. As of Tuesday, September 5, the Trump administration announced the termination of this program. President Trump proposes that Congress take responsibility for immigration, as opposed to the executive branch of government. This provocative decision has already sparked controversy from Democrats and Republicans alike.

Obama disapproved of the decision on Facebook, describing it as wrong, self-defeating, and cruel. While President Trump stated that he does not want to punish children for their parents’ decisions, he also insisted, “we are a nation of opportunity because we are a nation of laws.” Congress has been given 6 months to create a DACA like law.

The following are important points regarding the Trump administration’s intention to end DACA:

  • No new DACA applications may be filed as of yesterday;
  • No new travel documents requests may be processed or filed as of yesterday;
  • All pending DACA cases will be adjudicated;
  • All DACA cases that will expire before March 18, 2018, must file their renewals no later than October 5, 2017;
  • All approved DACA cases will be allowed to expire and will only be revoked if the applicant falls outside of acceptable parameters;
  • Travel documents previously issued will be honored;
  • Customs and Border Patrol can exercise discretion on allowing people back in with a travel document;
  • No extensions of DACA will be allowed after March 18, 2018;
  • It is unclear how long extension will be granted although historically they have been allowed as long as three (3) years.
