The general public sometimes believes that a question about a legal issue can be handled quickly and only takes a few seconds over the phone. However, this is rarely the case. Analysis of a legal issue is similar to a medical diagnosis. A client's history will have to be evaluated. The events that led up to the legal issue will have to be explored. Educated choices will have to be provided. A review of different forms of relief should be provided. Estimates of time and resources are needed and a rate of the chances of success may even be appropriate. The "diagnosis" of a client's legal issue, as well as the method of treatment to resolve the issue, takes time. Potential clients should understand and appreciate their attorney's use of time to deliver this service. Our firm, therefore, encourages setting time aside for the initial consultation. Whether this is done by phone or at one of our office locations, we want to spend time with the client at the beginning of the case to make sure that the case proceeds in the right direction. We further want the client to get an initial understanding of their rights, alternatives and pricing. Generally, the initial consultation will be a good opportunity for a client to evaluate the lawyer and the lawyer to evaluate the client. Fees for initial consultations vary from case to case. Typically, our only free consultation will be for personal injury cases, where it is customary that the client only pays out of the award. However, in other types of cases, we generally charge a reduced fee for the initial one half hour spent with the client. Clients in emergency situations will most often be able to speak to an attorney right over the phone the minute that they call. Sometimes fees in emergency situations are deferred until a later time when the attorney and client agree to meet.
