The Department of Justice has announced the extension of registration deadlines for those required to register under "Special Call In Registration." Temporary visitors to the United States who are males of the countries of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are being permitted four additional weeks to register. Thus, the new deadline for registration of these individuals is now March 21, 2003. All those who entered the United States before October 1, 2002, are being permitted the additional time to register. The male citizens of this group have been referred to as "Group 3." Additionally, the deadline has been extended for Group 4. These are male citizens or nationals from Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan or Kuwait. Again, those who entered the United States on temporary visitors prior to October 1, 2000, are being permitted additional time to register. As the deadline for these male citizen visitors was later than other groups, Group 4 has now until April 25, 2003. These provisions do not apply to certain non-immigrant visa holders under the "A" visa or "G" visa. Likewise, special registration does not apply to those who applied for asylum before certain registration dates were in effect, those who have been granted asylum or those who entered without inspection to the United States. Failure of a visitor to timely register can cause incarceration, deportation, criminal charges and the denial of immigration benefits in the future. Readers are encouraged to consult with an attorney prior to registering. Attorneys are allowed to attend registration with their clients. |
