Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia Granted Extended Temporary Protected Status

|

The Department of Homeland Security will be extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the Sierra Lone, Liberia, and Guinea another six additional months. There are still some fears over the effects of the Ebola virus, which had ravaged these regions in the latter half of 2014.

TPS will commence on May 22, 2016, and will be extended until November 21, 2016. For citizens of these countries, the re-registration dates begin on March 22 and will last until May 23. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is encouraging applicants to re-register for TPS within the 60-day time period. Despite the fact that the conditions have improved substantially in recent months, there is still more time needed to aid in the recovery of those affected by the virus.

Applying for Employment Authorization

During this time, applicants may apply for the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to allow for continued work authorization. USCIS will allow EAD's that are expiring or near expiration an extension for at least six months and all existing ones will be valid until November 21, 2016.

Applicants will be required to submit the following:

  • Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status
  • Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization
  • Application fee for Form I-765
  • Payment for the biometrics services

Are you currently waiting for the outcome of your TPS application? Note that you will not be required to fill out Form I-281 unless requesting a new EAD. Remember that when submitting your TPS application, be sure to include all of the necessary materials, as you do not want to risk having your application denied.
