Tie Vote By Supreme Court Blocks President's Immigration Plan

|

This morning a tie vote by the supreme court blocks president Obama’s expanded immigration plan for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for the Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). The decision affects work authorizations and periods of authorized stay for individuals that qualify under DACA and DAPA programs.

When this program was announced it was soon challenged by Texas and 26 other Republican states claiming the plans were unconstitutional. The tie vote from this morning’s supreme court ruling means this plan will be put on hold. This decision is a disappointment for many immigrant families and their advocates as it could break up families and cause economic problems for many American communities.
