A catastrophic gas explosion occurred at The Clyde apartments in Oak Cliff, Dallas, Texas, on the afternoon of Thursday, May 28, 2026, claiming three lives, injuring five others, and displacing residents across the building's 22 units. Located at 409 East 9th Street at Patton Avenue in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, the complex was fully engulfed in flames shortly after the blast. Aerial footage showed thick black smoke rising high above the Dallas skyline, debris scattered onto neighboring properties, and windows blown out across surrounding structures.

Dallas Fire-Rescue escalated the response to a five-alarm fire, with approximately 120 firefighters dispatched to the scene. By that evening, officials confirmed three fatalities: Sylvia Collins, an 81-year-old community activist; Marisol Perez; and Perez's 18-month-old son, Erick. At least five others were hospitalized, with one reported in critical but stable condition.

Investigations Are Underway

Authorities confirmed a gas leak was reported in the moments before the explosion, but multiple residents described smelling gas in the area for several days before the blast. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the federal body that investigates major accidents and disasters across the country, has opened a formal investigation into the incident. The official cause of the explosion remains under investigation at the time of this writing.

Legal Action Has Begun

In the days following the tragedy, lawsuits have been filed against Atmos Energy, the natural gas utility operating in the area, and the complex's management. The suits allege gross negligence, asserting that those responsible failed to properly monitor conditions at the property and failed to warn residents of the gas leak. Utility work was reportedly underway in the area at the time of the explosion.
