Adoption can be an amazing event for any family and in Texas, it is possible to pursue many different adoption avenues. What is required for adoption in Texas?

Like any other state, there are certain requirements that must be met before you can adopt a child in Texas. There are also a wide variety of avenues that can be pursued.

Adoptions in Texas can include:

  • Open or closed
  • International or domestic
  • Private
  • Infant
  • Older child or special needs

After determining your desired adoption, you will then have a better idea of where to start. All adoptions require you to pass a home study, which essentially evaluates your home, background, finances, and other aspects. This ensures that you are equipped to successfully adopt and raise a child.

Along with passing the home study, you must also:

  • Be at least 21 years old, financially stable, and responsible and mature
  • Complete the proper application
  • Provide appropriate references
  • Show evidence of marriage or divorce, if applicable
  • Agree to a background check
  • Attend training sessions

Individuals hoping to adopt can work with either the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services or with a private adoption agency. Most step-parents pursuing adoption do so through a private agency.
