Theft is one of the oldest crimes, and it has historically been the subject of harsh criminal penalties throughout the world. For example, people living in countries that are under Sharia law are a risk of having a hand cut off for theft, while horse thieves could expect to be hung if caught in the Old West. Today, Texas state law continues to enforce rigid penalties for theft crimes.
